When should I apply?
As soon as you know you will be unable to work, you should apply.
This is true even if you are receiving other assistance such as worker’s compensation or private disability benefits thru your employer.
Disability insurance benefits can go back a year from the application. There is also a five month waiting period before benefits can begin for disability insurance.
SSI benefits cannot begin any earlier than the date of the application. So every day you wait is a potential day of lost benefits.
